In an effort to slow population growth in the face of waning public support for immigration, Canada has announced a major cutback in its immigration targets.

Prior to this, the immigration ministry had projected that 500,000 new permanent residents will be admitted in 2025 and 2026. But the statement was made after Canada's population jumped to 41 million, mostly as a result of an increase in immigration.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated, "We acknowledge the pressures facing our nation and must modify our policies accordingly, even though our economy needs newcomers."

According to the ministry, Canada's economy recovered from the COVID outbreak without going into recession thanks to the immigrant boom. However, according to a recent survey, 58% of Canadians—a 14% rise from 2023—think that the nation takes in too many immigrants.
